Rayagada: While the world continues to debate the scope and implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), an inspiring breakthrough has emerged from one of Odisha’s most backward districts. For the first time in the state, AI will be used to monitor and support the healthcare of pregnant women in Rayagada district.
In an initiative aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, a technology-based diagnostic kit named “Digital Diagnosis Device for Pregnancy Monitoring” will be introduced. This AI-driven kit will track the physical and mental development of the fetus from the early stages of pregnancy to delivery. The use of this modern technology is expected to bring about a revolutionary change in the way maternal healthcare is delivered in remote areas.
Rayagada has long been under scrutiny for its high maternal and infant mortality rates. These concerns have not only drawn the attention of state health authorities but have also become a matter of national importance. In response, both ground-level health workers and district officials are now showing renewed dedication to addressing the issue with the help of advanced technologies.
Under this initiative, 200 AI-based pregnancy monitoring kits are being procured and distributed by the health department. The kits will be used to study the fetal development comprehensively, and in case of any complications or abnormalities, early diagnosis and treatment will be possible — potentially saving the lives of both mother and child.

Adding to this, ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers will be provided with smartphones and will receive specialized training on how to operate these AI devices effectively. This grassroots-level empowerment is expected to strengthen early monitoring, timely intervention, and overall health service delivery for expectant mothers.
The success of the pilot trials of these kits has already been established, making this large-scale rollout all the more promising.
Though delayed, the Odisha government’s decision to implement this modern healthcare intervention in a backward district like Rayagada is being hailed as a game-changing step. If successful, it could serve as a model for other underdeveloped regions across the country.
This integration of AI in rural maternal healthcare not only signifies technological progress but also demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusive and equitable health solutions.
