Sniper dogs, specially trained to enhance wildlife security, will be deployed in Odisha’s key forest divisions, including Similipal, Satkosia, Debrigarh, Hindol, and Athagarh. These highly skilled canines are equipped to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs), bombs used for poaching, and traps like snares, as well as track wildlife targeted by poachers. Their exceptional sense of smell and tracking abilities make them vital in combating illegal activities in dense jungle terrains.
Currently, two sniper dogs are actively safeguarding Similipal Tiger Reserve, serving as vigilant “forest warriors.” These dogs play a crucial role in curbing poaching and protecting endangered species by identifying hidden threats and tracking poachers. The deployment of sniper dogs across these sanctuaries is part of a broader initiative to strengthen wildlife conservation efforts in Odisha, ensuring the safety of its rich biodiversity and combating the rising threat of wildlife crimes.
