In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar have successfully removed an 8.7-kilogram kidney tumor, the largest ever recorded in India. The patient, a 50-year-old man from Odisha’s Nayagarh district, was diagnosed with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD), a genetic condition that led to the development of a massive cystic kidney, causing severe abdominal pain and discomfort.
The high-risk, five-hour surgery was performed by a skilled team led by Dr. Manoj Kumar Das, Associate Professor of Urology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The team included Dr. Sambit Tripathy, along with resident doctors Dr. Saharsh, Dr. Mithilesh, Dr. Huzaifa, Dr. Sabik, and Dr. Sachin. The procedure was supported by an expert anesthesia team headed by Dr. Pooja Bihani, with assistance from OT nurses Shreya and Parinita. The patient is now stable and recovering well, as per hospital reports.
Dr. Das hailed the surgery as a testament to teamwork and the patient’s trust, expressing gratitude to the family, Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, and Head of Urology Dr. Prashant Nayak. This rare and complex operation underscores AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s advanced surgical capabilities, setting a new benchmark in Indian medical history.
